VU Tennis loses 6-1 at Wright State

DAYTON, Ohio – The Vincennes University Tennis Team dropped five close singles matches in a 6-1 loss at NCAA Div. I Wright State Saturday.
The Trailblazers (1-2) lost all three doubles matches to start the day and picked up their only point in singles from sophomore Jose Zaatini.
“They came out strong in doubles and had early breaks in all three matches,” said VU Assistant Coach Brian Slack. “We tried to play catch up, but they closed while we were still backing away from the net at times. But, we fought to the end and our energy level was up. I was pleased with that.”
Freshmen Josh Barrenechea, Jose Luis Soto, Erick Bermudez and sophomore David White all lost matches with single breaks in each set.
“That puts pressure on the server,” Slack said. “But, you’re one break away from winning the set or match. Exactly what we talked about happened. We just came out on the wrong end of the big points.”
Zaatini’s 6-3, 7-6(3) win over Michael Lyzwa impressed Slack.
“He played well,” he said. “The first set was 3-all when his sophomore experience really showed up. He was down 6-5 in the second, broke serve to get even and then jumped up 6-0 in the tie-break.”
“Our level of play today was much higher than last week at Northern Kentucky and Bellarmine,” Slack said. “We’ll need that energy in our next match.”
The Trailblazers play at Bradley in Peoria, IL, on Feb. 18.
