Reed, VU 3rd after 1st round of VU Invitational; Play wraps up today at Country Oaks
The Vincennes University Golf Team was in third place and VU freshman Colton Reed was tied for third, individually, with a score of 75 after Sunday’s first round of the VU Invitational at Country Oaks Golf Course in Montgomery.
Danville Area Community College led the field after the first round with a team score of 302. Brescia University followed at 314 and VU carded a team score of 315 on the day. The Trailblazers were followed by Cincinnati State (319), Oakland City (334) and Kaskaskia (350).
Individually, Danville’s Cooper Tarter led the way with a first round 71. Brescia’s Hayden Young shot a 73 and Reed and Danville’s Shane Bryant came next with their scores of 75.
Play wraps up this afternoon with the event’s second round.
“We played up and down but, with four of our top five (golfers) being in their second college tournament, maybe that is to be expected,” VU Coach Dennis Chattin said. “I just think we are better than we played (Sunday).”
Country Oaks was a challenge, Chattin said, adding that most of the VU golfers are still making the adjustment to both playing longer shots and making shorter shots that provide a better chance at making par.
“Also, we just have to putt better,” he continued. “That old statement of, ‘Drive for show and putt for dough,’ is true, but I would add that you have to chip for dough as well. We know what we have to work on.”
VU’s other golfers and their first round scores were:
· Stephen Perkey 78,
· Shelby Stewart 79,
· Ryan Reedy 83, and,
· Michael Molt 85.
