VU golfers grab 2nd place in VU Invitational

The Vincennes University Golf Team climbed past Brescia University on the second day of the VU Invitational Monday to finish second in its own event, held at Country Oaks Golf Course in Montgomery.
Danville Area Community College held onto its lead from the first round and won the outing with a total team score of 610. The Trailblazers finished at 625 to edge Brescia's score of 627. Cincinnati State was fourth at 631, Oakland City fifth with a score of 671 and Kaskaskia was last, carding a team score of 686.
Cooper Tarter of Danville led throughout, shooting a first-day 71 and then enduring a 78 in the second round for a medalist total of 149. Danville's Shane Bryant and Hayden Young of Brescia both finished with two-day totals of 151. Danny Gravett of Cincinnati State was third at 152. VU freshman Colton Reed tied with two other golfers for fourth at 153. Reed finished Round 1 in third place.
VU Coach Dennis Chattin was pleased with his team's play on Day 2.
"We played better today, and I'm pleased we are making progress. I believe we still have room to improve," he said after the tournament concluded. "I think we have some real solid players but this is a process of learning to play longer courses and 36- and 54-hole tournaments.  We aren't as consistent as we would like to be but I was really pleased with our second day scoring improvement over the first day.  The course was set up longer and the pins were definitely set in tougher places but we were still able to improve by five shots.
"We have a few days off but then play three tournaments in five days, which will be a good test for us," Chattin added.
Chattin said Reed showed coachability on top of a good touch on Monday.
"He had a nice tournament and I was especially pleased with the strong finish because three of the last four holes were birdies for him," the coach said of Reed. "It would have been easy for him to pack it in but instead he showed he can grind and focus when it would have been easy to just finish. With four holes to go, I told him I wanted him to play a 'four-hole tournament, one under par.' After the round, I told him that the three-under par was O.K. too."
Other VU finishes were:

  • Shelby Stewart: 155,

  • Ryan Reedy: 159,

  • Stephen Perkey: 159, and,

  • Michael Molt: 165.

VU will head to the Brescia Invitational on Sept. 23 in Owensboro, KY.
