Dave Hunter, The Voice of the Trailblazers

Dave Hunter joined the Vincennes University staff in 1995. During his broadcasting career, he worked in sports, management and sales. Since the 1982-83 basketball season, he has been the voice of Trailblazer basketball. Since 1972, Hunter has broadcast more than 2,000 local high school football, basketball and baseball games.

He became VU Sports Information Director in 2001 and retired in 2008.

Hunter is a 1961 graduate of Bicknell High School. From 1965-68, He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps as part of the White House Communications Agency staff in Washington, D.C. He began his broadcasting career in Carmi, Ill, in 1971, before joining Vincennes radio station WAOV in 1972.

Hunter was honored with the Indiana Associated Press “Best Local Play-by-Play Award” for his call of the 2001 VU-Wabash Valley basketball game. He also received the prestigious Indiana High School Athletic Association Media Award in 1993 and the Western Tennis Association’s Media Service Award in 1994.

Hunter is also a certified USTA and ITA tennis official who works Big Ten and Missouri Valley Conferences matches. In addition, he works the USTA Boys 16-18 Nationals in Kalamazoo, MI, and the ITA Summer National Championships in Bloomington, IN. He also coordinates VU summer tournament events.

Hunter and his wife, Kay, have two daughters, Shannan Turpin and Heather Whaley - both VU graduates; two grandsons, Samuel and Brett Turpin, and a granddaughter, Emma Kay Whaley.
