Blazer Bowlers set to chase ITC crown; NJCAA champ VU among 16 after top college bowling title

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Vincennes University Blazer Bowling Team is among the nation's top collegiate teams battling for the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships title this week at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, NE.
VU enters the event after landing the program’s 18th NJCAA National Championship last month. VU's Jalen Scott-Jones won the all-events title. Teammates Brett Golabek, James Fielder and Kyle Geurtsen also finished in the individual top 10, and Golabek and Fielder joined Scott-Jones on the NJCAA All-America Team.

SMYRNA, Tenn.– The Vincennes University Blazer Bowling Team – fresh off its 18th NJCAA National Bowling Championship – continued its stellar late-season run by qualifying over the weekend for next month’s United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships.

CHEEKTOWAGA, NY - The Vincennes University Blazer Bowling Team won its 18th NJCAA Men's National Championship Saturday, topping Hudson Valley Community College by 141 pins at the NJCAA Bowling Championships in Cheektowaga, NY.
Individually, VU's Jalen Scott-Jones (pictured right) won the all-events title, edging Cayuga CC's Bobby Moro by one pin, 2,471 to 2,470. VU's Brett Golabeck, James Fielder and Kyle Geurtsen also finished in the individual top 10 (see final individual and team standings below).

VU Blazer Bowlers in midst of leaders at NJCAA Bowling Championships

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y.- Vincennes’ Kyle Geursten and Jalen Scott-Jones were second at 1,176 in Men’s Doubles competition Friday on the opening day of the NJCAA Bowling Championships in the Buffalo suburb of Cheektowaga, NY.
A duo from Schoolcraft combined for a score of 1,185 to win the Men’s Doubles title.
In the Men’s Singles competition, VU’s Brett Golabeck tied for second with a score of 668. That was beaten by Muskegon Community College’s Aaron Sherman, who rolled a 723 for the top score.

It’s another huge weekend for Vincennes University Athletics.
In addition to the Trailblazer Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams being in action both Saturday (at Daley College) and again Monday (men host Three Rivers, women head to Southwestern Illinois), the VU Track & Field Teams are at the Eastern Illinois Friday Night Special in Charleston, IL.

VU Blazer Bowlers get season rolling with 16th place at Midwest Collegiate Classic

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Vincennes University Blazer Bowling Team's Kyle Guertsen just missed making the all-tournament team with a sixth place individual finish, but the Trailblazers - as a team - weren't able to shake off a sluggish start and notched a 16th place showing at the Hammer Midwest Collegeiate Classic over the weekend in Milwaukee, WI.
William Penn (IA) University won the 42-team event at AMF Bowlero Lanes in Milwaukee. William Penn tallied 11,579 total pins. VU had 10,698 for the tournament, which was the Trailblazers' season-opening event.

Gary Sparks is in his 18th season as coach of the Vincennes University bowling program and has eight National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) championship titles to his credit. Those championships came in 1993, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2009. Sparks was also named Coach of the Year in 2003, 2004 and this season. He was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame prior to the 2003 tournament.
